Let’s face it, the chances of marketing emails being ignored, marked as spam or deleted are high. The subject line is the first impression on your audience. No matter how great the email content is, it is worthless if it never gets read. Below are some insights in bite size:

1. Be clear and concise and no nonsense: Time is an asset. Exaggerated lures are disliked.

2. Funny subject lines do sell: A humorous subject line stands out in the sea of dry emails. Yet make sure it will not offend your audience.

3. A touch of controversy: Controversy gets attention, e.g. “The upside of infidelity” and “No money, no honey”. But you need to have a thorough understanding of your audience’s tastes, or else it can backfire.

4. Use just one and only one word: One-word subject lines can be the answer.

5. Include numbers and lists: “9 ways to lose 5 pounds in 2 weeks” and “Top 10 errors in web design” are two examples. We are drawn to digits.

6. Apply FOMO: The fear of missing out (FOMO) is intense. Stir up that flock mentality, e.g. “Final hours – last chance to save 30% on subscription”.

7. Write mysterious subject lines: Mysterious subject lines can arouse curiosity, e.g. “It just happened…”
